How would you feel if you were treated like a doll every day of your life? If your father or husband didn't let you have your own opinions? Nora in A Doll's Life knows what that feels like. Nora never could express her feeling or her own opinion in her marriage or in her relationship with her father. She was treated like a child, like a doll. A "doll wife" is someone who never gets their own opinion in her marriage. The picture shows a young girl playing with dolls, something that most girls do, and it was something that Torvald did to Nora. He treated her like a Barbie or an American Girl Doll. Today that wouldn’t stand in society. Women have more rights and situations like Nora's are viewed badly. In today’s society, having a degrading relationship would be viewed terribly, but Nora leaving Torvald would be viewed as normal. A woman asking for a divorce today would be normal but back in the late 1800's early 1900’s; it was almost unheard of while women being treated like doll was normal.
